Eric aragundi
Eric grew up in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Seeking more opportunities, he and his family moved to the Dominican Republic, but they struggled to make ends meet. Despite the hardships, Eric's mother and aunt were determined to secure a better future for him. His aunt, already in the United States, helped his mother file for a visa. After much anticipation, Eric set off for the United States, dreaming of a brighter future.
When Eric first arrived in the U.S., he was overwhelmed by the opportunities before him. The abundance of possibilities made him feel like he could achieve anything he set his mind to. He explored these opportunities with curiosity and excitement. Academically, the transition was gradual. One of the most significant differences he noticed between the education systems in the Dominican Republic and the U.S. was the availability of financial aid, scholarships, and funding for students, especially those pursuing STEM fields. This support system gave Eric the encouragement he needed to push forward.
At the age of 26, Eric enrolled in Bronx Community College: Colleges & Schools – The City University of New York (cuny.edu) to pursue an associate degree in business administration. However, the journey wasn't without its challenges. He failed his mathematics entrance exam, yet with the support of his professor, he realized his potential in the field. This led him to change his major from business administration to mathematics. His professors offered guidance and support, encouraging him to pursue his interests relentlessly. He graduated with his associate degree from Bronx Community College and pursued a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a minor in computer science at Lehman College.
His academic journey at Lehman was pivotal. Conducting research with one of his professors opened his eyes to new opportunities. At the institution, he learned never to be silent. He made it a point to meet new people and seize every opportunity that came his way. His efforts paid off, earning him two scholarships for his master's degree at Columbia University. He proudly graduated in the fall of 2023 with a master's in statistics with a concentration in machine learning. Eric's story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of seizing opportunities, and the impact of supportive mentors. From Guayaquil, Ecuador to the prestigious halls of Columbia University, Eric's journey exemplifies the transformative power of education and determination. Now a professor for Lehman College and Bronx Community College, he hopes to give back the same way his professors did for him, to help other students achieve their dreams while also keeping in mind his long-term goal to pursue his PhD. Good luck, Eric!
